Hymies, Thanks for being decent. I mean that. You are not amazing. But , happily you do not suck either. As a matter of fact , I love your corned beef. There I said it. Great job! Your matzoh ball soup has plenty of room for improvement. But , hey, you can't win em all. Its not that I wont order it and eat it. its just not a magical experience. No love lost. I like your bagels. They do the job. Hymies. I like you. Lets continue to be friends and build on this. Let's also both agree to give Murray's the finger when at all possible. We hate him. We can become better friends as a result of our hatred for Murrays so let's sleep well at night knowing that. I love that you have Dr Browns Black Cherry Soda. Thats classy. Big ups. Hymies. I got my eye on you. Lets turn the 3 stars to 4.......come on, lets DO IT!

Hymie's is solid. I've gone for breakfast on several occasions and leave satisfied though not incredibly impressed. That's okay. It's a cute, little deli. I'd take it over Murray's. Service is average, food is average, price is average, ambiance is average. They have a pickle bar which is pretty cool but doesn't offer anything all that intriguing (lots of pickles and some cole slaw, potato salad, pasta salad, and some cut up coffee cake). Meh. I dig it and I'll go but I'm still dying to see an exciting brunch place pop up around here.

One of the best delicatessens outside of the city. Any dish you get with cold cuts will be a winner. I've been going here for about four years and eaten here at least 30 times. Only bad experiences involved poor service (think that waitress has been fired since), burnt coffee and really bad orange juice(the OJ is defiantly syrup based and out of a mahchine). Big fan of the deli sliders, I usually sub out the roast beef for pastrami.

Haven't eaten here in over 30 years, and better than I remembered as a kid! Pickle bar ALONE worth a visit, but I, personally, had a chicken breast panini w/ tomato, basil, mozzarella, which was delicious! Extremely fun, attentive, energetic server made our visit FABULOUS! We'll be back as soon as we can!

DO NOT COME HERE if you are dining alone! I came for lunch and the hostess (who was doing her job as per her mgr's order) refused to seat me until one of 6 small tables opened. There were several open tables but she said "I can only sit people eating alone at one of those specific 6 tables". I waited 20 mins, several tables opened and just myself and another person eating alone stood in the lobby. It was honestly insulting. Hymies' food is good but I felt disregarded bc I was a solo dinner. I went to Murray's instead and it was great!!! No need to patronize a place where dining alone is such a problem.

How anyone could hate this restaurant is beyond me. Two things go against this place, possibly. 1) the other customers at times are unbelievable in myriad ways; 2) you occasionally get a rude, dotty, absentee (sometimes all at once, most of the time only one of those traits at a time) waitress. Other than that, eat up, friends. All soups, ALL, are amazing everyday. Pickle bar included with lunch/dinner and is consistently excellent, including many side salads not just pickles. Corned beef specials here are worth a trip alone. Fries are frozen ones, yes, but they're the flat steak fries not enough places serve anymore, and better yet, none of that crunchy crap on the outside that so many places serve. Perhaps the best turkey club sandwich (at Dagwood height) anywhere. Brown gravy (for fries of course) is excellent. Breakfasts are epic in size and delicious. I'd list which but I can say they're all good. Dinner platters are fantastic and worth the prices. Overall Lou Barson knows what he's doing with this place. We're lucky to have it. Murray's renovation was handsome, but the food is nowhere near as good and the service is a joke there. Hymie's wins.

Impressive! Rolled with great company, and accompanying that was served up good... but large portions of food. I mean, ididnt eat all day and I was still unable to finish all that was on my plate. The food is good,.. no I will say very good, and I have no complaints about the service or establishment, I would go again and again... especially if I was looking for a feast at reasonable prices. Hymies, you have satisfied thoroughly another customer... but from the other yelpers reviews, that should be no surprise.

This place is great. Breakfast and lunch served all day. Their bakery is pricy though. Pickle bar was D-eeeLicious!

No frills, friendly deli in Bala Cynwyd. People at work always talk about the corned beef special here... as if it were the Holy Grail. Needless to say I stopped by since corned beef is sorta my thing. First off.. This place is hard to find if you don't know where u are going... And all the trees and suburbia in general can be quite disorienting, so that didn't help. And city folk like me get quite ticked off by the hoards of soccer moms and other asses who show no mercy and tailgate, when obviously I didn't know where I was going. Come to the city biatch! That's all i gotta say....Oh I'm sorry....i digress...anyway. So Hymie's is old school, as you walk in it's classic diner/deli.....seats on one side, booths and tables, and the deli is on the other side, with a mini market where you can pick up kosher delights of your choosing. I went when it was not busy so I had time check out the menu on the board. Lots to choose from, sandwiches, prepared foods, cold cuts, all the usuals. That was only for shits and giggles, 'cause the reuben was what i wanted. I got this to go with some potato salad. Served by staff that was helpful and very friendly. The reuben itself was damn good. Not "off the chain" good but up there. Loaded with meat and good 'kraut and tasty bread. I was satisfied. I think I will have to go check out more stuff once I strap one on to deal with the madness of Montgomery drive in rush hour.

My first Jewish restaurant experience in PA since I've moved out here. The food was good (I had an omlette and home fries and everything was just a little too salty), the costumers were Jewish, and the coffee cups were silly. They had little "overheard at the restaurant" quotes on them which reminded me of oldjewstellingjokes.com . I will come back here. The food was high quality and not overly greasy. The service was just okay... our server was MIA after a while but what do you expect from a diner, really.

As far as Main Line Jewish delis go, this place sets the standard for authenticity. The food, or that is to say, the food you're expected to order at a place like this (breakfast, soups and deli sandwiches) is just right. Hymie's sandwiches are packed full of meat and served on soft, fresh Jewish rye. The matzo ball soup and the cabbage soup are hearty, but not too salty (which if you've ever made matzo ball soup, you know is no mean feat). And the coffee is good enough and served hot enough even for my grandmother, a woman who must hold some record for sending inadequate cups of coffee back to the kitchen. If you've never been to a Jewish deli before, this is a good one to start at. Definitely try the corned beef special (it's a ton of corned beef with russian dressing and cole slaw) or the hot pastrami sandwich. And get the cabbage soup, that's my favorite thing they serve. Of course, this place isn't actually Kosher. It's just Kosher style. Try the rest of the food on the menu at your own risk. I used to eat at Hymie's fairly often, and I've gotten been served some very questionable looking burgers and some frankly nasty looking salads. Hymie's used to have a very old, dilapidated interior, but a few years ago they completely redid the dining room, and now it's a bright space with roomy booths and tables. What's more, they painted an entire side of the restaurant with a 'family photo album' motif: it's 5-foot paintings of polaroids of people posing in photos. Pretty weird, but I like it. Finally, there's a tradition you should know about at Hymie's: the waitresses, or at least some of them, are surly old ladies who have worked there for decades, and for whom you are just one of millions of tables served. One of them has electric-blue hair. The rest of the waitresses are very friendly, though. This place does Jewish deli food really well, and is a local landmark. It's where I always bring my friends from out of town. If you're only going to eat one meal on the Main Line, I recommend you eat it at Hymie's.

A few Saturday's ago - or maybe it was a Sunday, I forget - I walked in during lunch hour and there was a line going out the door. Just the other Saturday (around 5pm) it wasn't crowded at all. Hit or miss I guess...or maybe it's just really busy during lunch. Anyway, the beef of brisket sandwich was great. So was the matzoh ball soup. Others I was with had the reuben corned beef sandwich. It was also very good. Hymie's have a nice pickle/salad bar near the back that has those big deli pickles, plum tomatoes, onions, etc. The place was clean, the staff is nice, the food is very good. The place is comfortable. I like this place. I'll definitely go back.

Decent Jewish deli. The pastrami is some of the best I've had outside of Katz's in NY. Good pickle bar and pastries. Never seem to find black and whites there, however.

My mom always tells stories about how she & her friends used to come to Hymie's when cutting out of class at Merion, so of course we just had to swing by one Halloween night when my friends & I were hanging by home (which is South Philly). Our food was so disappointing we have never returned. I could barely stomach my sandwich and potato salad, and one of my close girlfriends spent half the meal trying to figure out ways to make it look like she'd eaten hers. My parents felt the same exact way. It may have been good in its heyday when my mom was a schoolgirl at MMA, but unfortunately we won't be returning anytime soon.

Their deli sandwhiches are about the best around and this spot has become one of my favortie places to eat. The only reason I can't give 5 stars is their breakfast. Been there three times and every time it sucked. The eggs overcooked, the homefries undercooked and cold, and the bacon cold, but burnt to a crisp. For how well they do with the deli, I'm baffled how they screw up the easiest meal of the day.

Hymie's is a very nice, very clean deli. There's a great weekday breakfast special that is very reasonably priced. The service is a little spotty as some of the waitresses tend to disappear after they bring you your food. You gotta speak up sometimes. Get there before 11 on Sun. mornings if you don't want to wait as it gets jammed up after then. The deli section is well stocked with practically anything you want and you don't have to wait in line to be seated. Hymie's is a popular destination for Mainliners but it is really not worth the wait. The menu is extensive and their cabbage soup is authentic (although overloaded with sugar). Traditional fare is very good. Tip: If you don't get seated promptly, do what everyone else does: walk over to Murray's across the street for equally good food and equally mediocre service. Pros: breakfasts, cleanliness Cons: disappearing waitresses

Crazy good brunch! Went here with some old friends for Sunday Brunch, and I had already had in mind what I wanted- Eggs Benedict- my favorite breakfast dish. Usually, restaurants serve Eggs Benedict by itself, so i ordered a side of cheese fries, too. Hey, i love cheese fries. I didn't even get a chance to look at the menu very much, since i was talking and knew what i wanted already. However, I wish i had read the menu since there is a god damn pickle bar in the back of the restaurant! I got up to go to the bathroom and my jaw dropped as I as i walked past and stared at the endless types of pickles on the pickle bar. A F***ing pickle bar, it does not get better than this. When i got back, our food arrived and to my suprise, my eggs benedict came with potatoes and a random danish. The plate was huge and I finished almost the entire thing, plus the cheese fries- which were lava hot and amazing. The Egss benedict was absolutely perfect, the hollandaise was the perfect thickness, eggs were cooked perfect, the serving was large. I loved it. I am giving this place 4 stars since i really need to go back and sample some more items. Yeah, i am talking to you, pickle bar. Parking is in the back.

Hymie's is authentic, and by authentic I mean that the old Jewish woman doesn't wait on you... you wait on her. Heavy duty piles of pastrami, corned beef, liverwurst, whitefish salad, et al. lay limply on seedless rye. It's hard to go wrong here, so do yourself a favor and don't venture off the sandwich page. They like to remind you that they're "more than a deli!!" but really... no they aren't. The milkshakes are thick and the pies are fine too, but this is no place to get meatloaf or pot pie. Tradition is tradition for a reason. Gentiles welcome. Kind of.

Hymie's is very good, not great, but worth a couple of returns. Please note - this is NOT a real-deal kosher deli, but a decent imitation! I think it's more like a diner with deli-influence. I mean, who could resist the pickle bar???? That in and of itself is worth the wait during the lunch crowd. I've tried their corned beef - it's okay. Kind of fatty (but still good). They do this Latke reuben that's ridic-good with cole slaw and russian dressing. My best experience here was on a random Saturday morning for brunch seated near the window with my friend. I had the lox, eggs and onions and it was perfect - a little greasy but yummy. Paired with the pickle bar and a cup of coffee it was perfect.

Hymie's is the place to go if you happen to be in the suburbs. This delightful kosher deli is perfect when I am craving a lip smacking bagel and whitefish salad sandwich. If that's not up your alley they also offer a whole diner-size menu of other delicious food. I enjoy the half sour pickles from the pickle bar and the fresh matzoh ball soup with vegetables before my meal. The waitresses have an endearing crassness and they love their regulars. This place is perfect for family brunch gatherings, but be prepared to wait on the weekends.

You know - I like the food here, I really do...BUT seriously, the service sucks and it's WAY over priced. If I'm paying you $11 for pancakes then I expect some syrup maybe? And when I point this inconvenience out to you, "Well YOU didn't ask!" is not what I want to hear. It's pancake LAW that you always get syrup, damnit! Also, $10 is way too much for 4 chicken fingers and like...8 fries. It is. I don't want to take this route but, screw it, I'm going to say it: I can go to McDonald's and get a meal w/ a drink AND then go but an US Weekly for entertainment for $10. And you know what Hymie's? I'd be much happier. I wish I had that option but your sweet potato fries keep bringing me back...

I will say this the food is o.k., the service is o.k. But the place is absolutly filthy! No matter how delicious the food is I would not risk it. I am not a germaphobe. I have been know to drop something on the floor and use the 30 second rule. But this place is truly disgusting. If you want to get the same great food, try walking across the street to Murray's! The place is small but the food is excellent and the place is CLEAN! I think it is worth waiting an extra 5 minutes to assure that what you are eating is not going to have you barfing all night or worse sitting in the ER with food poisioning. I think you should try the reuben. It was excellent as was the waitress (Joanne?) who took my order. Enjoy

Favorite deli of all time! Been eating Hymies all my life. Lou Barson has the best Deli on the Main Line. Favorites are the Cabbage Soup, matzah ball soup, and the Nova. Definitely go to Hymies, you will love it!

With much anticipation my wife and I discovered Hymie's located near our day trip destination from DC, the Barnes Foundation. We are always up for good "deli" and DC is not home to anyplace that qualifies. So finding one half way to New York would be a treat. But Hymie's failed to make the grade. We won't be back. The borscht had so much vinegar in it we had to send it back. The whitefish was only O.K. And the special of the day- the corned beef on a kaiser roll was down right awful. Finally the service was as slow as we have ever experienced. Overall Hymie's is not a place we'd ever go back to.

I called in a takeout order this past Sunday. They forgot to put spicy mustard, lettuce, AND tomato on my friend's grilled chicken sandwich. Additionally, the chicken had a fair amount of gristle and fat attached to it making it less than appetizing. I was given the wrong sandwich. Hymie's was nice enough to deliver two fresh sandwiches - correctly done this time (my friend did name drop so this could have had something to do with their being SO nice about correcting the snafu). My fresh sandwich did have the avocado that was promised but it was all centralized on about a third of the sandwich. Eh, needless to say, I wasn't that crazy about the food. There is a new place, Katz's that just opened two weeks ago over in Bala Cynwyd but they aren't staying open on weekends until September - I'll give them a try then.

Reminds me of my youth and deli's I grew up with. Older somewhat annoyed waitresses that seem to be part of any real deli experience. Pickles and sour tomatoes are a part of every meal even when the taste of vinegar totally seems inappropriate, they are totally appropriate here. And sandwiches made with meats that to me makes boars head seem like a pale comparison. I love this place!

once again much like murrays based upon the reviews on the internet I was looking forward to eating here so when I got here the place was packed and I had a 10 minute wait so now Im really excited because crowds usually equal good food.when I was seated I saw the all you can eat pickle station and dove right in it was good but I expected much better cole slaw from a deli I ordered their chicken salad sandwich because the internet gave it good reviews and I cant handle corned beef or pastrami (too much salt) I found the sandwich to be mediocre and the bill to be high but because of the pickle bar I will return and try something else

It's is Christmas morning in the City of Brotherly Love and my beau and I go in search of breakfast. Our usual haunts are closed for the holiday - one can't blame them - DunkinDonuts is open but DD on a holiday leaves me feeling as gray as their coffee.... alas it hits us "Hymies" and we happily head to Merion. Hymies is jumping on this day - with Jewish, Christian, White, Black, Indian - a melting pot of patrons pack the place. My boyfriend is Jewish & from NY and I think Christmas must be hard on him sometimes with my family and our traditions - so this will now become 'our' new tradition. We dig into a HUGE potato pancake and eggs Benedict - lots of coffee & a good paper. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah , Joyous Kwanzaa - whatever - whoever - at Hymies - the more the Merrier!!

Best deli in Philly! Instead of a salad bar, they have a pickle bar. Good pickles. Half sours, dill, everything! Very kid-friendly. Great, quick service. Fifteen minutes there, we were already eating! great matzo ball soup and tongue. Next time I'm in Philly, I'm going back.

Went back to Hymies again, two weeks later. Dammit, got a Corned Beef on rye that left alot to be desired. The CB was dried out, and not so much taste to it. My mouth felt like I was chewing a paper towel. It had been sliced a long long time before they served it to me. Suffice it to say - 2 bad days in a row, I'm outta here!!

Packed in the morning on Sunday, the restaurant was much more manageable at 2pm. We were seated right away. Getting our food right away was a different story. It was slow, the waitress forgot pretty much everything (my bacon, a second piece of toast, a drink order) etc. My eggs were cooked just right but the potatoes were bland and dry. The pickle bar in the back is pretty great, and the portions are large, but it's way, way overpriced for the quality of the food and the service.

Veteran deli waitresses from central casting, you know the ones that walk purposefully up to your table with the pencil already on the pad. Small talk. I don't think so. But they're nice, but purposeful and their purpose is to get you your food with as little fuss or side trips as possible. You know the ones that carry the creamers and extra napkins in their apron, maybe the young ones want to make extra trips but after 40 years...... I was introduced to the cultural and gastronomic wonders of the phenomenon called the Jewish deli as a young teenager just moved to Overbrook Park. Mom, why are we the only ones on the block with Christmas lights? And there is this little thing with strange symbols on it nailed to the front doorway, I'm gonna take it off! Devout Catholic though she was, she admonished me in no uncertain terms to leave the mezuzah just where it was as a little extra help could never hurt. As an adult, I came to appreciate my mother's ecumenical wisdom. Our next door neighbors, the Steiners held their own welcoming party for us, inviting us in for Sunday brunch. Cherry blintzes, chopped chicken livers, Nova, water bagels? What the hell is going on? Where have these people been all my life? Where are their cookbooks? I felt like the first guy to look into Tut's tomb. Do you see anything? "Yes, wondrous things?". It was just the beginning. The next Saturday, she took me to Barson's (of the Hymie's family) on Haverford Ave. to buy me lunch for helping her with some yard work. I think you'll like the corned beef special she said. OK great. Epiphanies can be graded I'm sure, but this was off the chart. For the next 3 months I had at least 4 or 5 CBS's a week, one day I ate three. I was after all a teenager. So, I have a soft spot in my heart for Hymie's and any of the tragically diminished number of authentic Jewish delis still operating. You know, still corn their own beef, make a dynamite matzoh ball soup, and chopped chicken livers made the same way it was in the shtetl, house made pickles, is there a crunch like that anywhere? Still don't know what the hell a wing is when you're staring at a bunch of lox. And gefilte fish? I know they don't keep the carp in a tub and kill them with a mallet anymore. Do they? And to their credit they've never fallen into the New York trap of deli as show biz with 2 pounds of meat piled 7 inches high. Thats not a special, thats a photo op. But, writing this, my plans for Parc over the weekend have changed to a well worn and warm spot on Montgomery Ave.

The pickle bar is always a big hit with my family. We have been coming here for years with my grandparents who live in the area. The menu has a large variety of options so it's good for groups. Last time I came I had a bacon, egg, and cheese on a bagel along with an iced coffee. Our server last time was not friendly at all and seemed to be annoyed to be there, but that has been my only issue with service here. Make sure to check out the counter, which always has desserts that look to die for!

It does not get any better on the Main Line. The owner, Lou takes enormous pride in his establishment. One never feels rushed from the table no matter how busy it gets. A perfect meeting place for BREAKFAST. Ideal spot for quiet conversations. There is a $5 eggs, bagel, coffee deal that is reasonable for the neighborhood. LUNCH time gets very busy, but after years of angst, they have this French hostess who is efficient, polite and attentive. I get a soup and half a sandwich. With the salad bar included it is a full meal and a bargain at $10. The pastrami is the best thing outside NYC metro area. The chicken soup is just fair, stick to the beef cabbage soup (it is terrific) but remind the waitress to make sure to put meat pieces in the bowl. ATMOSPHERE: It is THE place to be! An amazing neighborhood crossroads establishment. You see everyone here from the local gas station mechanics, to nearby St. Joe's University staff, to UPenn surgeons, to the Township Commissioner, to the County District Attorney, to a US Ambassador. No airs, everyone is polite and friendly. A great institution in a wonderful neighborhood.

I've been going to Hymie's for many years and perhaps it can use a throwback Thursday to realize some badly needed improvements. In the years prior, the waitresses were a little crass but they were good at what they did. Hymie's now hires a staff that is more focused in having personal conversations with each other than caring about customers. A few weeks ago I ordered a nova platter. It was not edible. When the waitress finally came to my table with the check and asked if everything was good I said the fish didn't seem fresh. Her response was they have a new place they bought it from and she'll tell the manager. Today I ordered juice and over easy eggs. The food was brought to the table and I asked the waitress to forget the juice. She giggled and said oh, I forgot. The whole time she was chatting with other waitresses. The eggs came cooked well done sobs left them. The standard question was how was everything when she could clearly see nothing was eaten. Sam Barson would be spinning if he knew about the quality of his food and service today. He certainly wouldn't recognize his own restaurant.

Sadly, I'm in town for a funeral so I write this review with a heavy heart. My wonderful cousin Rich passed away and that brought me back to my hometown. We went to Hymie's on a recommendation and we were so glad we did. Though we were sad and down, our waitress Linda was just excellent. It was only after the meal that we found out that she knew Rich. Her sympathies meant more to us than anything. As for the food, and I know it sounds silly to still give a review about food, that's what yelp is all about. We started off with the matzoh ball soup and it was fantastic. Hymie's has a pickle bar and it was just great. We then had salads. Mine was spinach with chicken and strawberries along with feta and almonds. My guy had the julienne salad. Loaded with meats and just terrific. Even though I don't eat cake anymore I could not avoid a piece of the Jewish apple cake. I drown my sorrows in it. My boyfriend got the Lemon vanilla cake and it looked like the size of a small pizza. Of course we couldn't finish everything so we brought the desert home. Linda gave us her condolences and out the door we went with our take-out bag. Thank you Hymie's for making an absolutely brutal day have a nice meal at the end with excellent service and a very beautiful clean restaurant. Kudos to Linda for the sympathy she gave to us.

This place is amazing, hands down! I've been a loyal patron for over a decade. I especially love their breakfast! Also, the desserts are truly delicious, my favorite being the carrot and German chocolate cakes! Last but not least, their deli trays are really good and quite well-put together!

I had a sandwich. The bread wasn't bread, but thick, delicious, perfect potato pancakes, and in between was a steaming mountain of succulent brisket. Was it all just a dream? The world has changed for me. I'll never be the same again.

It's always a treat when Dining Partner agrees to take a drive out of the city to hit up a real jewish deli for brunch. I've been to Hymie's twice now and highly recommend it. The portions are VERY generous and the prices are reasonable. I've had both the challah french toast and egg/potato/bread platters. The food is nothing spectacular, but it's good and that's sometimes all you need. It's a popular place so it can get busy, but the line moves fairly quick. There are tons of menu options and the free salad and pickle bar is awesome! I've seen other reviews mention bad service, but I've never had an issue. Everyone has been very friendly and attentive. I also purchased matzoh ball soup from the to-go case, delish! One of these day's I'll tackle one of those ginormous pieces of cake on display when you first walk in.

What an amazing experience! I have not had true, expertly done deli food since leaving NYC. Everything our server brought to the table was wonderful--salad, Sable platter, etc. And my sandwich? A mountain of corned beef, pastrami and swiss that will keep me in lunches for most of the week! A "slice" of carrot cake (that was, I swear, larger than my first NY apartment) topped off the meal. Best part can be summed up in two little words: Pickle Bar. I'm in love people.

This is the first time I have done take away at Hymes. My friend and I both ordered sandwiches. I got the turkey brie panini and my friend ordered the southwest chicken wrap. When we got home, my sandwich was not a panini. It was on a roll and not toasted. The sandwich had the correct meat and cheese. My friend's wrap was far worse. She had a few bites of her sandwich and then, mid chew, she bite down on something hard. It was a shard of plastic. I was shocked and immediately called the deli. They said they would make a new wrap for her at no charge. I left about 15 min after my call. Sadly, when I arrived the wrap wasnt made. I re-explained why I was there and the waitstaff told me the new wrap would be out in a min. Ten min later I still didnt have my wrap. Finally, the wrap was made. There was no apology. I was surprised at the lack of customer service as I know this is a popular spot and one that I have enjoyed desserts from many times before.

If you ever had gefilte fish, kreplach or bagels and lox, this is the place for you. Located in the heart of Narbeth, Pennsylvania, this place is a joy to behold. The ambience is great....old pictures of Uncle Miltie, Ed Koch and many other ethnic favorites. Service was great. The waitress served unlimited coffee and was extremely nice. My lox and eggs omelette was enough for two. Highly recommend this joint.

Had breakfast this morning and the food was good but the service was very poor. Waitress ignored me and spent all her time looking at the register or something. Had to get up and go back to ask for a condiment. She also never came buy to ask if my drink needed filling. I had to ask other staff for service.

A little pricey, but if you want a massive, fresh sandwich made with quality meats, cheeses;Bread and ingredients this is a great place. My father&I met here for brunch. The waitress was very nice and the staff wrapped the massive half of a corned beef/pastrami sandwich pretty well for the trip back to jersey. All in all, very good experience.Like I said,a little expensive but it wasn't Arby's quality for sure. The pickle bar was great with the salads and many different pickles to choose form. Two thumb's up for Hymie's!!

Hymie's vs. Murray's is Pat's vs. Geno's only jewish deli style. Hymies is my go to. Its that place you have gone with every relative. Its the place with the pickle bar! Its the place you go for corned beef, pastrami and the type of sandwich you eat for three days. The waitresses call you hon. The place is consistently great. The market carries all things wonderful. How can you miss? Plus...Breakfast all day. Its like a diner only better. Love ya Murray's but today Hymie holds my Gentile heart.

I had not been to Hymies in a few years because I had moved out of the area. Well, it is still the best deli outside of New York. The Reuben and tuna on rye were fantastic and the pickle bar never disappoints. It was well worth the 45 minute drive.

Fantastic little shop. Everyone was nice to a certain degree. I do wish I would have asked before getting a half pound of shrimp salad...$17.99 A POUND!!!!!. Either way the deli sliders were a great choice as I got to try a little of everything. Will return for dine in some time because the pickle bar is calling my name.

Awesome pickle bar is complimentary with your meal. HUGE tasty salads with fantastic dressings. Attentive service. White-meat chickens salad is delish! Get there early for dinner or you will have to wait for a table. Deli has everything for take-out, too! Needs a bigger bathroom, unfortunately.

Man do I love Hymies! On entrance l noticed a GIANT case, of GIANT cakes and I mean GIANT cakes! "OH BOY!", I thought, cake this big isn't humanly possible. So I had to bring out the reasonable, rational side of myself and order it before my meal. I had to make sure this was real. Did someone sprinkle fairy dust on top of these cakes to increase their size? Did someone outsource to Willie Wonka? Or maybe the bakers are GIANTS who bake for us little people? Who cares!? LET'S EAT!! So I ordered my cake and no one judged me for skipping breakfast! I thought I would get a sliver, but I received such a large portion, it would end up lasting me all month! .....the rest of the food was great too :)

I was introduced to Hymies my junior year of college and back then I thought it was pretty much the best brunch place EVER. I am from NJ and we have some pretty awesome diners (obviously), and for me, this place comes really close to my favorite local diner at home (which says a lot) when it comes to breakfast. For the longest time I literally only ordered breakfast because I just never seemed to be able to pass up an omelete, no matter the time of day. In reality, all their food is great, but for me, the breakfast and the pickle bar are the highlights. My other favorite menu item is the thanksgiving sandwich (hello, delicious homemade stuffing). I have never really had a negative experience with the staff, but this place does get insanely crowded on weekends so that can be a downside. They are always nice about it, though, and pass around bagel samplers with various toppings. They also let you split your check however you want, which is a huge plus since I almost always here in a group of people.

Finally got a chance to try Hymie's and I am very pleased with the results! I've heard of Hymie's of course, it's a famous jewish deli on the main line. I just never got a chance to dine there before. Stopped in for breakfast and was VERY pleased! Got there just before 11:00 on a weekday and got seated right away. Parking is NOT great. Its offstreet metered parking. There is plenty of space but only 1 lane in\out of this lot. Also note: no left turns when you leave! Patrons were mostly seniors having breakfast or early lunches. I perused the breakfast menu knowing that was what I was here for and got a simple order of bacon\eggs and rye toast. Also ordered a short stack of Challah French toast to see what that was about. Toast was perfect, my Challah french toast yummy, and the eggs nicely over easy. Our server, Anne, seems like she has been working there her entire life! Very friendly and good service too. My buddy got the creamed chipped beef which was not only excellent, but made to order! I might have to try that next time I'm there. Prices may be a bit high, but the portions are pretty large too! I'll definitely be back to try some of their sandwiches! Update: Morgane, the French hostess, certainly has the mostess! Pleasant and able, she could work at my restaurant anyday!

Amazing. Have heard really good things and they have a pickle bar. Came in around 1230 on a Sunday and was sat within 5 minutes. Drinks followed. We sat across from the pickle bar! Our waitress was very nice and helpful. For it being busy our food came out very fast. I was surprised. The sandwiches were Huge. 10oz meat!! I tried three mino clubs (roast beef, turkey, corn beef) and they all came on mini pieces of rye. Super cool. My lunch was great! My mom and gf both couldn't even finish theirs because sandwiches were too big, not to mention they raided the pickle bar. Check This Place Out!

This is easily one of the top delis in Philadelphia. The Reuben sandwich is fabulous, piled high with tender corned beef and crunchy-tart sauerkraut. The restaurant is bright and clean, and the staff are friendly. Service can be somewhat slow at times, mostly because they are usually swamped with eager, hungry customers. Hymie's is a definite go-to for great sandwiches on the Main Line.

OK, I am from Long Island and have grown up with real NY Deli food. I didn't expect to find any in Philly, till my current manager recommended this place. The first thing I did was order a bagel sandwich with roast beef and let me tell you the deli meats are rich and they give very huge portions of the meat. You are amazed the bread doesn't break under the huge portions and wonder if you'll have any appetite for dinner. The other amazing things is that this is the best corned beef I ever tasted and I generally don't eat corned beef. But their corned beef with cole slaw made me a fan. Then there is a pickle bar, which I love and found not one dud pickle in the bunch and its free with the food. I could eat those pickles all day. But one peeve is the hot dog. Its so-so. Considering they have plenty of Hebrew National food around, one wonders why don't they make a Hebrew National hot dog? For a kosher deli, you think they would get this right, considering the energy that goes into deli meats. Oh well, the lackluster dog keeps this from getting a 5.

It's one thing to be funny rude and a whole other thing to be just rude. Went here recently with my two children and father. The waitresses made it very clear that we were bothering them by asking to order. They were beyond rude. When my father asked for mustard, it was if he had asked out waitress to donate a kidney. The huffing and puffing was overt and excessive. Hymie's fails to make dining enjoyable because the service is so very bad. We will not be returning. Murray's across the street is looking pretty good.

I wanted my 50th review to be special, and deli sandwiches hold a special place in my heart. I've been meaning to try one of these mainline delis for a little while. I was in the area and decided today was the day. I wasn't sure which of these delis to hit, Katz's, Murray or Hymie's, so I decided to go to the one with the highest yelp rating. I got there just before noon and got a table for 1 right away. Soon after the place got packed for a lunch rush. I got a water immediately upon being seated and soon after my waiter came over so I could order a coffee. I loved the Yiddish message on the coffee cup which made me feel like I was getting the real Jewish deli experience. I noticed a pickle bar toward the back of the restaurant so I decided to stroll past and hit the restroom. The pickle bar looked alright, with a variety of pickles and things like macaroni salad. No one informed me it was complimentary until I finally asked after I got my order. I'm sure the regulars are all aware though. After eyeing up the pickle bar, I stopped in the restroom. It was a single 1 person mens room, which I imagine gets a line during peak business. It smelled a little bit and didn't seem very clean. Once I got back to my table, and elderly couple was seated next to me. They ordered some soups that looked really good. I was very interested in the lady's matzo ball soup which looked good. My sandwich arrived and looked exactly how I would want a Jewish deli sandwich to look: too large to fit in my mouth. I got the overstuffed pastrami, corned beef and Swiss on Rye. My major complaint was the for 11 dollars, it should have at least come with a few chips on the plate. The sandwich was good, especially after I removed the onions and added some spicy mustard which was on my table. Once I found out the pickle bar was complimentary, I added a few slices of pickle as well. Now it was really starting to come together. I only had the one type of pickle, because it was the only one that was sliced in small portions. The pickle was ok but not the greatest. I did however try something else from the pickle bar that I'd never had before. The sweet kugel was pretty good, although it wasn't labeled so I was scared I was eating some sort of weird head cheese. I'm still not 100% sure what it is. Overall my experience was good. I just don't know if it was 4 star good. Therefore it gets the A-ok rating. I'll have to try some of their competition to get a true comparison.

I have been to Hymies several times in the last few weeks; it took a while but I have eventually decided that there was no reason to go back. While I don't have any really serious criticism, I was never happy with the quality of the food; I always left disappointed. I twice got a latke reuben. The pastrami is dry and not flavorful, and the latkes are soggy. On another occasion I got a "Schlemiel" sandwich, which is turkey, cole slaw, and Russian dressing; again the meat was dry and it just wasn't very good. But the sandwiches cost $10, so they ought to be better than average. Most recently I tried to order a chopped liver and turkey sandwich. The waitress told me they they do not do that. I was boggled. It seems that although the cook in back knows how to put turkey between two slices of bread, and he knows how to put chopped liver between two slices of bread, putting both at once on the bread is either too difficult or more trouble than he cares to take. Jewish persons may also find it useful to know that this deli is not in any way kosher; many salads and sandwiches involve bacon.

4stars for the pickle bar alone. I would seriously come here from NYC for the pickle bar. Maybe it was because my friend and I went Labor Day but the service was as if they didn't care who was dining in the restaurant. That being said we ordered quite a lot and they come in deli size portions (aka big enough to feed an army) I would recommend the fried matzo (pancake style), any kind of omelette and DEFINITELY the matzo ball soup! I wasn't too impressed with the pastry assortment. They have a lot, but the flavor/texture could be better.

When my husband's bubbe used to live near Bryn Mawr, she'd buy sandwiches from this great deli for the family during their visit. Then, when I showed up in his life 3 years ago, he would bring me here. Their cookies and cakes are yummy too. Our favorite sandwiches that we order all the time are: T.K.- hot brisket served between two potato pancakes topped with gravy, apple sauce on the side Shmoozer Combo - corned beef and pastrami with slaw and russian dressing runner up: Gantzer Knaker - corned beef with slaw and russian dressing These sandwiches are big and more than filling. I would describe the sandwiches further, but really, you should just go and partake in their delicious food. Hymie's also has a nifty pickle bar in the back of the deli (complimentary). This place is more than popular, try and get there early or be prepared for a wait (bring a book, crossword puzzle, something). The waiting area/front of house is small and there are only a couple of benches outside. There is street parking and a lot in the back, but it fills up very quickly. **We've even ordered sandwiches to bring home to VA with us. The bread does get a little soggy - even with the dressing on the side, but we don't care. This place is worth it. Maybe I'm breaking a cardinal rule by stating this, but I liked Hymie's more than the Carnegie Deli in NY.

We came back the following week for lunch. The pastrami sandwich was solid. The "Yellby," with thinly sliced brisket, melted cheese and au jus, was very good. The rolls were soft but held their integrity with the frequent dips into the au jus. We also took home some smoked sable and "easy-on-the-salt" nova lox. Just had them with South St. bagels, capers, sliced onions and tomatoes and cream cheese. Ah-mazing! The sable was buttery and smoked perfectly and the nova lox hit the spot! We will no longer need to train it up to NYC and bring back smoked fishes from Zabar's. Thank you, Hymies!

To each their own, but I this is a spot that I love to have lunch with my family and friends. The food has never disappointed, and the portions are generous. I can't speak to the breakfast, but the soups and hot pastrami are fanstastic. Not to mention they are always great with our son. The wait can be long at times, but we always find ourselves adding our names to the list.

Murrays or Hymies? This is the age-old question for Jewish delis in Merion. I have always been a Hymies girl. I just feel at home when I'm there. I tend to stick to my favorites - breakfast is nova lox on an everything bagel while lunch will be lean corned beef on rye with russian. When you pay at the counter, it's right next to the cookies and sweets and you just have to buy a hamantachen to eat in the car ride home. That is my ritual and I just love this place.

Christmas morning 2012 dawns, with our merry band of lapsed Catholics finding ourselves famished after early morning gift opening. We are not in the mood to cook, so we head out in search of a good breakfast place. To our dismay, every one of our standby diners and frequent haunts are closed. What does this wayward band of hungry folk do? Why, head to our local Jewish deli, of course. :) Hymie's has been in Bala Cynwyd for as long as I can remember, and that's a long time. Over the years they've increased their restaurant area from a tiny corner to clearly half the size of the whole place. On this Christmas morning they were bustling with many people clearly like us, hungry and not interested in cooking. Our group of six was seated with only a small delay, and the menu thankfully offered both breakfast and lunch fare so both chicken fingers and creamed chipped beef cold be enjoyed. Among the group we ordered creamed chipped beef (2 orders), a "Tel Aviv Tommy" (knockwurst wrapped in pastrami on a bun), waffle, chicken fingers and a grilled cheese. See what I mean about menu variety? Sides were bacon (delicous, really crispy, no rubber chew) and scrapple (deep fried - bummer). All items were solidly done - the creamed chipped beef earned solid reviews, close to the legendary Ms. Chrissy Spaulding's creation at the now closed Hanne's Breakfast Nook in Havertown. Waffle was nicely flavored, crispy yet with a soft center. Fries served with the sandwiches were of the steak fry variety - thick rectangular slabs, crispy on the outside with soft hot potato inside. The Tel Aviv Tommy was declared 'really darn good' by the Honorable Pastor Baby Back Ribs. In addition to the menu items, Hymie's has a "World Famous" pickle bar, full of varieties of pickles made on the premises. This is complimentary with your order and serve-yourself. Many varieties - garlic, dill, half-sour, etc. - were sampled and declared quite good by the group. The only trick is that the pickles are not labeled on the bar, so you learn what you got when you take your first bite. Service was pleasant and reasonably efficient, with all requests met cheerily and efficiently. Six of us ate for $63 with tip. Happy to add this spot to our breakfast rotation. Only one star off for deep fried Scrapple. It's a pet peeve. Extra points for the pickle bar, what a fun treat!

Hymie's is my go-to place whenever I have a craving for the Jewish deli classics -- whether that's corned beef, nova lox, or a black and white cookie. It's a wonderfully casual place to get great comfort food, plus that pickle bar in the back is a-may-ziiiing. What's even more awesome is that they also have a deli counter for things to go. The chicken matzo ball soup, aka Jewish penicillin, is the best I've ever had -- a must for when I'm down with the sickies.

We stopped in for lunch today. Two tables for 9 of us. They sat us promptly and took all of our orders. Food came quickly. Everything was delicious except their prized matzo ball soup. I thought the matzo balls were tasteless. They must cook them in water then transfer to soup. Their split pea was great! Great restaurant. Parking is a hassle but they have a great pickle bar. Highly recommended!

Variable. Many people love this place. We have going it to be inconsistent. Sometimes the quality of the food and portion sizes are wonderful. Other times it is skimpy portions and bland fare. It can be good but IMO it can't be counted on.

Hymie's is simply a staple of my existence. I probably go here at least twice a month and always look forward to the visit. The first thing I am dying to do when I get in there is to have a go at the pickle bar. I am a huge fan of dill spears and the crunchy variety is in large abundance at Hymie's. There is also a fantastic potato salad (the one with the chunks of carrots and celery, not the one without them) at the pickle bar, so I usually can't resist walking away with two bowls. The food on the menu is great and cheap! Go for the breakfast option (the omelets are good, and so is the sausage!) or for the traditional Jewish deli options. I find them to be the most well-created items on the menu. The pastrami is tasty and sliced thinly, so it's easy to eat. The matzoh ball soup gets me every time-- the bowl is filled with a giant matzoh ball and while there isn't much chicken, I can't say I'm unhappy about it (plus, I can buy quarts of it in the deli area). And good luck paying for your bill at the register without getting seduced by the bakery. The rugelach (Nutella raspberry) is amazing and the black and white cookies are a must. Make sure when you ask for a table that you have all of your party with you, or they will make you wait. The only reason I give the place four stars is because in the recent past, I have not been getting great servers; either they are inattentive or just on this edge of rude, so I can't rest easy giving Hymie's the perfect score. However, there have been occasions where I have had stellar service from fantastic servers. So it depends. Don't let a few bad service days get you down, though-- the food is a much larger part of the experience and it's definitely worth the trip.

Had the grilled salmon salad for first time. Per request, the waitress asked if dressing was GF for me. Said chef not sure. I appreciated the attention to detail. Was fine with oil and vinegar (they offer both red wine and balsamic). Really like their trendy salad bowls.

I grew up in the NYC area amongst awesome Jewish food and some of the finest authentic Jewish delis, so when I found myself on a 9-month stint in the Philadelphia suburbs on business, I visited all the local Jewish delis to figure out which was the best - and Hymie's was definitely the one! The corned beef and pastrami sandwiches are exactly as hoped for, and the pickle bar is a wonderful touch.

Hymies food is always a crowd pleaser with high quality meats, breads, rolls, pickles, and salads. They offer great catering and delivery service expertly facilitated by Marilyn. I'm not sure why it is so hard to get cheese on the sandwiches (even when I ask), but otherwise, it's great!

Some time ago, when I came up to this area more often, I used to go to Murray's. One day, I decided to try Hymie's instead. I haven't been back to Murray's since! The true test to me when it comes to a good deli is whether or not they can do the basics right. Sure, you can get creative with some sandwiches, put all sorts of stuff on them, but to me if you can make a good basic turkey sandwich, and a good basic bowl of soup, then you know what you are doing. Today, after one heck of a turkey sandwich on rye for dinner, and a fabulous bowl of matzoh ball soup, they simply reinforced to me why I think they are the best deli in the Philadelphia area. A lot of people seem to agree as they were packed at 6:30 pm today. Despite the crowd, service was as friendly as could be. Oh yeah, head over to the cashier and pick up some cinnamon rugelach to go. You'll be glad you did!

Very good deli. Lox sliced thin and excellent. They do nice platters for entertaining or Shivas , etc. Would suggest passing on the whitefish salad. It is mayofish salad. Way too much mayo and Where's the Fish???

I suggested this place to my best friend as a half way point to meet for brunch based on both the reviews and the menu. I wasn't familiar with the location nor the restaurant but I figured we'd give it a go. I was jonesing for good ol' french toast or pancakes. When you walk into Hymies, it's a very obscure set-up. You have the "bakery"/deli off to the right, in the center you have this central half wall and some seating to wait off to the left, a very tiny hostess stand and some tables and booths off to the left. There seems to be a lot more wait staff and workers than people ordering, but that was my impression. We were seated off in the abyss of tables and chairs tightly pushed next to each other. I felt like it was a haven of gossip. Not kidding -- the people next to us seemed to be leaning in to listen to our conversation. I would have to give the polite look over "mind your business" stare down every few minutes. My friend ordered an omlette with feta, spinach and tomatos while I went for the challah bread french toast, a cup of coffee and a side of turkey sausage. The coffee was beyond drinkable -- it tasted like the bottom of an ashtray. When I said something to the waitress, she brought me another but the guy next to us said it was strong so I may not like it. It literally tasted burnt. Our food came out fast. Mine looked good but as we all know looks can be deceiving. Cut up the french toast and as I was about to cut up the links of turkey sausage (I only got two little tiny shriveled up sausages), water spurted out eveywhere. The bread for the french toast was stale and they didn't dip the bread into the mixture long enough. The sausage was so freezer burnt it tasted like a wet sponge. Before our meal came the waitress said something about going over to the pickle bar, but we didn't understand if that came WITH the meal or was seperate, because per the menu, there was a charge for going over there. Walking by it to use the facilities, the pickle bar was a little icky and lifeless -- a former salad bar set-up hosting what looked like past it's expiration date 'cumbs. That's ok, I'll pass. Think you could find a much better deal with MUCH better food someplace elese. The wait staff was kind and friendly, but the food.. blegh.

I have only had breakfast on my multiple trips here, but I enjoy it. Omelets are above average, potatoes are descent, coffee is good and the rye bread is great. The real question is Hymie's or Murray's? Personally, I am partial to Hymie's. I think their food is a little better and more consistent. I also like the bakery/deli counter they have. It's not as good as a lot of places downtown, but it's close and still a descent option for a meal.

There's no place like this in California, so every time I'm in Pennsylvania, I need to stop in for my bagel and lox.

What would make me drag my husband from University City all the way to Bala Cynwyd? Hymies of course! Nothing beats the fresh corn beef, I love it in a special and I love it in the hash. I will eat it in a box, I will eat it like a fox. I will eat all of Hymie's everything oh yes I can. Now that that's over, go here for that nostalgia that accompanies family friendly dining (and we don't even have kids). Portions are large, breakfast never disappoints and the day before my wedding, I came here for the turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce plate. I highly recommend it. People are nice, and the free pickle bar is great. I also can't resist the bakery section on the way out. Bring your appetite.

Great place to take folks from out of town, a good Jewish deli experience, with the locals painted on the wall and the pickle bar in the back( which is just great!), and deli counter full if desserts to take home as well. They aren't always the best with being sent over to my gluten allergy, though generally they keep things straight.

Went post truck through the window...still sassy, food quality is always top notch, service can be all over the place, but if you want great pancakes, a perfect bagel and some 'tude...its for you

Hymie's has so many odd little quirks that make it really standout from any competition in the area. I know many people know it as Hymie's Deli but the deli section is never nearly as packed or talked about as the Restaurant is. I still have yet to try any of their famous sandwiches or dinner entrees so my review may be somewhat skewed; I strictly go there for their breakfast items because they're just that good. Most of them are typical "diner-style" entrees, but Hymie's serves them up in 5-star fashion. The portions are just enormous for the price-tag with them, and every meal is accompanied by access to their pickle bar for only $2.95. (over 10 different kinds of pickles, along with coleslaws, macaroni & pasta salads, etc.) You really get some serious bang for your buck at this place. My favorite breakfast item so far is definitely their Nova Eggs Benedict--it blew me away. I've seen some restaurants toy with this idea in Brooklyn eateries and also in fine-dining establishments doing an upscale brunch, but Hymie's really hits the nail on the head. The Hollandaise Sauce was outrageously good and covered the whole plate, while the baked salmon was heated to a perfect temperature as it sat cozily between the sauce and eggs cooked to perfection. I know they offer a wide array of Acme Smoked Fish Products, and while I don't really have a taste for whitefish, herring, etc. the baked salmon was an unreal experience on my breakfast palate. I used to live in this area for quite some time and have recently moved away; it saddens me I have yet to indulge in their sandwich menu but hopefully I'll be able to trek this way again soon.

Came back from the city and was hungry, so a friend suggested this place. We went in on a Sunday evening and it was hopping, so we had to wait a bit to get a table (there were 6 of us). Sat down and we received menus and water right away. It took some time before the waitress came over and took our drink orders and food order. Ordered matzo ball soup and the soup arrive warm and the ball was frozen. We sent it back and it came back cold. Odd, because when you warm something up, you usually make it warm, not cold. A friend ordered a steak and wanted it medium well and it came back medium rare. Upon return to the kitchen, instead of putting back on the grill and cooking it to order, the waitress decided to throw it out. I think I may have to give this place a second chance, for it has some really good food, but due to the service, I gave it 3 stars.

Murray's or Hymie's? Hymie's or Murray's? It's a long-standing debate out this way. Frankly I never could find much difference and tended to decide depending on which side of the street I wanted to park on on any given day. And I liked Hymie's food just fine. Sure it's not NY deli Jew food, but it will suffice. That is until I started ordering it delivered using Mainline Delivery. Hymie's gets the order wrong EVERY single time. Yes, every single time. Order your sandwich sans cheese, it comes with cheese. Add cheese and it arrives naked. Ask for your dressing on the side, it will arrive with no dressing whatsoever. What's more, they're surly and sarcastic about the fact that they've mucked up. In fact, they act like they're doing you a huge favor to wait on you. *********** Alright. I gave back two stars. Hymie's has redeemed themselves by managing to not muck up my last few orders. And I've got to hand it to them: their matzo ball soup is the best.

If you're looking for Katz's Delicatessen type sandwiches, this is your place. The overload of meat and flavor is unmatched anywhere in the area. Not feeling like a larger-than-life sandwich? Try the breakfast menu. That order of eggs, potatoes, and meat can also come with a bagel, making your meal not only delicious, but filling to the max. And never leave without getting your samples from the pickle bar. I've been here a few times in the past year and I plan to continue coming here until I can no longer chew!

On 8/21/13, we visited this wonderful deli. The food is outstanding & service was great.... We all had Matzo Ball soup w/ chicken to start off, then came the special sandwiches. The pickle bar was amazing ;) Highly Recommend if you want a outstanding deli sandwich & other Jewish specialties :)

I love this deli and love the fact that I can get massive portions of fresh, deli entrees and sides in the suburbs (so I don't have to drive all the way to 4th Street). The shmoozer is my sandwich pick and it is piled with corned beef, pastrami, coleslaw, swiss, and thousand island dressing, all on soft rye. Love it! The meat is sliced thin and very tender. The chicken salad and whitefish salad are very good, as well. I have gotten them a la carte and eaten them on the Blue Diamond nut thins. Just try it. The potato latkes are great with sour cream and apple sauce. BUT you MUST MUST MUST try the reuben latke which basically combines my favorite sandwich here with my favorite side. It's a reuben served on 2 fresh, hot latkes instead of bread, and it may be artery-clogging but still delicious and worth the health risk. Try it with a side of the sweet potato fries. Plus, they serve La Colombe coffee. Love it!

Used to eat here about once a week when I lived close by. People are great, food is great, the pickle bar rocks, and the service is extremely fast. It does get crowded though, so sometimes you may wait a few minutes for a table if you go on a Saturday night. Completely worth it though, plus the soups are to die for.

Found this while driving back from dropping son off at an evening bar mitzvah party - so it seemed appropriate that we should have deli for dinner. Sadly, we were not as hungry to try all the wonderful menu items. Matzo ball soup was excellent - much better than the overrate Katz's Deli in NYC. My half a turkey sandwich with Russian dressing was amazing - great meat and perfect size. Husband ordered lox and bagel and my offered sample was the well know combination - We longingly looked at the bread pudding and all the other desserts... Next time!

I was really looking forward to lunch at one of the best deli/restaurants around, and when the smiling hostess said "fifteen minutes wait" I was pleased, since today was a very busy day. Thirty five minutes later, we were still four tables from being seated, and when I commented, the answer was "we can't say more than fifteen". Sorry, guys, but being condescendingly lied to is just not OK. Really unhappy with what passes for customer service now ... I had heard negative comments recently, but until now I didn't believe. Hymie's made a believer out if me.

Take it from this Jew, Hymie's is the real deal. What do you need to know? If you're looking for a Jewish Deli, you know what you're looking for. Big sandwiches, pickle bar, a table next to you full of everyone you can't stand talking to at Passover, a waitress who acts like she likes you, and on the way out a whole ton of cookies that you didn't expect to purchase. Go. Eat. You're skin and bones.

I have been a Hymies customer for over 10 years. It's been a good, reliable if unspectacular, Jewish Deli. I am also someone who enjoys dining alone with a book from time to time. A new "policy" of theirs makes it impossible for me to recommend this place however. I went in about 1:30 pm on a weekday. Place was full with a few people waiting to be seated. After awhile I noticed several small parties that arrived after I did seated before me and inquired as to why. Apparently, the manager (whom I was told is Harry) has instituted a strict policy where single diners can only be seated in a small row of two seat tables. I waited a few more minutes and watched as several tables were cleared, including at least two small 2-seater booths and one four seater. Still, the (very apologetic) hostess would not seat me even though I was the only one waiting. I guess this particular manager has never been taught that it's better to treat all customers equally and possibly occasionally lose out on a few bucks then to discriminate. It really does suck to be treated like a second class citizen! Eventually, a more senior waitress sat me in one of her booths and proceeded to nervously glance over her shoulder on the look out for the manager. I hope this small act of kindness didn't cause her any grief from big bad Harry! Never again, Hymies! You're good, but not irreplaceable. Bad customer service breaks places. Shame on you for setting up this discriminatory and insulting "policy." P.S. In the off-chance you read this, Hymies, I ended up (with take-out) ordering about $25 worth of food plus tip. I'm guessing that's about the same as the precious two person parties you favor.

Finally got over to the Main Line to try the grand daddy of suburban deli's, Hymies. Even during late lunch hour, the place was packed enough that there was not a booth available. Service was prompt and the menu extensive. They have a nice soup and 1/2 sandwich special which is a reasonably good deal, (Any lunch for under 10 dollars is a good deal these days... ). I ordered the Matzo ball soup. The matzo ball was large and fluffy, and the broth nice, but not as chicken flavored as I like. And it was under salted. Overall a good bowl of soup. I had a tongue sandwich to go with it, which was nicely served on rye (un seeded). Rye bread was good but nothing spectacular. You also get to go to the pickle bar. They had the standard dill pickles (in spears, whole pickles and slices) as well as half sours and tomatos. They also had health salad, potato salad and macaroni salad on the bar. All complimentary with your meal. The half sour were good though not garlicy enough for me. Overall good meal. I look forward to returning and trying the pastrami and the brisket. I may even venture to try one of their egg creams...

While nothing compares to the delis in Brooklyn when I was a child, this is nearby and good. The service is not the best, but what are you going to do?!

Fatty meats on rye Holy crap a pickle bar! Get cookies to go I mentioned to a buddy once I had a craving for a pastrami sandwich, and without hesitation he suggested Hymie's. If you've got some time to kill and a friend with a car, it's worth the drive out of center city through the park and out to the main line. It's definitely a lunch spot, boasting a menu with a ton of options; all the standards of course, but you didn't get in the car and drive all the way out here for a pre-frozen burger. You can get that anywhere. If you're going to Hymie's, get whatever big greasy concoction suits your fancy and know that it'll be sitting in your stomach all afternoon, making you feel guilty and filled with delicious. Whatever you get, make sure it's of the roasted meat variety, get it on rye bread, and enjoy! The place is staffed by older women with way to much makeup and a propensity to forget half your order, but it's worth it. Their sandwiches are stuffed full to bursting, and are a little on the moist side. There's definitely some fat drippage going on, and a distinct lack of lettuce or other toppings (unless you ask.) One of the best parts of Hymie's is the pickle bar in the back. Order your food, then head back and enjoy a delicious pile of brined treats. They also have potato and pasta salad, but avoid the mayonnaise-laden bowls and go for the giant dill spears. Don't forget to grab a few snacks like chocolate covered pretzels, cookies or other sweets in the small market on the way out. They're all worth it, and are $13/lb. You'll definitely be able to find a good place to grab lunch in center city, but if you're in the mood for good pastrami and bottomless pickles, Hymie's is your best bet!

Free pickle bar, great coffee, DELISH corned beef/Reuben/meat and affordable prices, you just can't beat it. The two best items of the menu, the cabbage soup (don't knock it until you try it), and the Shmoozer.

Best Tuna Salad. Seriously, get it on Rye bread and let the party begin. Soups are delish too. Bonus when you eat in, there's a pasta, pickle, salad bar in the back. YUM.

Four years later............. Dining room expanded by 50% in size, retail store size greatly reduced. Murrays is now owned by the Greek who owns the old Tavern next door.....Nothing against his background, but hey....the Barsons bought out Hymie 40 years ago......they get it. Had a classic corned beef special on rye with russian. I really liked the pickle bar--- classic half sours, sour tomatoes, and the BEST potato salad. Made me feel like a kid again. The pasta salad was a pass....but hey, its free if you buy a sandwich. I had to take half of the CB special home, it was so big. My sons had CB/Patrami Combos and a Reuben------all out standing....My wife was kvelling over the turkey and tongue on rye----now THAT is a rarity. We had the most outgoing, charming waitress I have had the pleasure of serving me in years. Gone are the 70+ yearold waitresses with the caked on makeup and the rhinestone glasses held on with a chain. They even fed us mini sandwichwes while we waited. No wonder the places was jammed to the gills with people of all ages and generations last Saturday morning. Hymies is a pleasure ......... Now if only Murrays could clean up its act.....
